UM pays you. Liability pays them.
Bodily injury liability defends you if you hurt someone. UM (and underinsured motorist, often combined) pays your injuries when the other driver has no insurance, too little, or hits and runs — subject to the policy. In a no-fault state people assume PIP is enough. PIP is $10,000. A Kendall ER and follow-up can eat it.
UM is first-party. You are the claimant. Stacking and limits decide how much room you have after PIP.
Stacked vs. unstacked, without the brochure
Unstacked UM gives you the limit on the vehicle you were in (or your policy’s UM if you were a pedestrian, depending on the form). Stacked UM adds the UM limits from other vehicles on the same policy. Two cars with $100,000 stacked UM can become $200,000 of UM for a claim. Premium is higher. In a two- and three-car Palmetto Bay household, stacking is often the cleaner way to buy a real limit.
One-car Doral files may not gain from stacking. We quote both. You pick.
The rejection form is not decoration
Florida requires a signed UM selection or rejection. Rejecting UM to save $8 a month is how a hit-and-run on 136th Street becomes a credit-card and lawsuit story. If you already rejected it, you can add it at renewal or mid-term, subject to underwriting.
Non-stacked $25,000 UM next to $100,000 bodily injury is a mismatch. We match UM to BI when the market allows.
