Hurricane prep for Florida pets: boarding, evacuation, and what pet insurance will not pay

When a cone covers Miami-Dade, the dog is part of the plan or the plan is incomplete. Pet insurance pays veterinary illness and accidents. It does not board a lab for four days, fill a generator, or replace a fence the surge took. Those gaps belong to other policies — or to cash. We map them before June.

What the pet policy will do in a storm week

If the animal is injured in the chaos, or eats something they should not in a dark house, accident coverage is the path. If they get sick because a pharmacy closed, we read the illness rules and the waiting periods you already served. A policy bound on Tuesday with landfall on Thursday is late. Waiting periods exist for this exact instinct.

Keep the policy number on your phone and a printed copy in the go-bag. Claims need invoices. A cash ER in Broward still generates paper. Demand it.

Boarding, hotels, and the homeowners side

Loss of use on a homeowners policy can pay additional living expense when the house is uninhabitable from a covered peril. Some hotels take pets. Some do not. Pet boarding is not automatically additional living expense. Flood has its own, thinner extra-expense story. Read that before you assume the kennel is a claim.

If you evacuate to family in Orlando, that is usually not a kennel claim. It is a family. Budget it like gas and ice.

Lost pets, fences, and the backyard after surge

A fence that fails in wind or surge is a property claim, not a pet-insurance claim. A lost-pet endorsement is uncommon. Microchips, collars, and a Palmetto Bay neighborhood group are the real “coverage.” We will not invent a rider that does not exist just to sound useful.

If a tree comes down and injures the animal, we look at accident coverage on the pet policy and liability on the home policy if a guest’s animal was involved. Two files, two photos, one afternoon.

Heat, power, and the car

Post-storm heat in a house without power is a veterinary event. So is a pet left in a car. Insurance may debate preventable harm. The Palmetto advice is operational: ice, a plan to leave, a crate that fits the car. Doral warehouses that become shelters sometimes take pets; city rules change by storm. Check the county list when the watch goes up, not when the wind does.

Bind in May

Start a pet quote while the forecast is boring. Pair it with a home and flood review if the yard is the kennel. We would rather sell you a quiet policy in spring than a speech in a cone.
