Full coverage in Miami: collision, comprehensive, and what lenders actually require

People say they want full coverage. Lenders say they require it. Neither of those sentences names the two coverages that matter: collision and comprehensive. In Miami, those two lines do different jobs — and one of them is how you get paid when the street turns into a canal.

Full coverage is not a Florida statute

There is no policy form titled Full Coverage. The phrase is shorthand for liability plus collision plus comprehensive, usually with uninsured motorist and the extras a loan contract lists. If someone sold you “full coverage” and the declarations page has no collision, you do not have what the bank meant.

Read the page, not the nickname. Collision pays your car when you hit something. Comprehensive pays many of the things that are not a crash: theft, vandalism, glass, animals, fire, and flood. Miami-Dade uses both more than a dry inland zip.

Collision in traffic that does not forgive

Kendall, Doral, downtown, the beach. Low-speed parking-lot impacts still generate bodywork bills that dwarf a $500 deductible. High-speed Turnpike claims can total a car. Collision is how your carrier pays you instead of you chasing the other driver’s $10,000 property-damage limit.

Deductibles are a lever. A $1,000 collision deductible lowers the premium. It also means you write a four-figure check before the shop starts. We quote two deductibles so you see the real trade, not a slogan.

Comprehensive and South Florida water

A summer storm on Coral Way, a king-tide backup in a low neighborhood, a car left on the street in Palmetto Bay while the canal comes up. If water finds the cabin, that is typically comprehensive — not collision, not flood insurance on the house. The home policy does not follow the Honda.

Theft and catalytic converters show up in comprehensive too. Glass claims in Florida often have their own deductible rules. Ask. A $0 glass deductible is a different product than a $1,000 comprehensive deductible applied to a windshield.

What the lender’s letter is really asking

If there is a loan or lease, the lienholder wants collision and comprehensive, named as loss payee, with deductibles inside their cap — often $1,000. They want to be listed. They want proof. If the policy lapses, they may force-place coverage at a price you will not like and a deductible you did not choose.

We bind the policy, send the certificate, and keep the lender packet from becoming a surprise on a Tuesday. If you bought the car on 167th Street Saturday, bring the contract Monday. Timing matters.

When dropping collision is rational — and when it is not

An older paid-off car can outgrow collision. The test is simple: if the car is wrecked, can you replace it in cash without pain? If yes, we can price liability and comprehensive only. Comprehensive is still cheap relative to a flooded or stolen car.

If the answer is no, keep collision. Miami repair costs and used-car prices have not gone back to 2019. We will show you the premium next to a realistic repair. You decide with both numbers on the table.
