Breed lists in Florida pet insurance: mixes, “bully” labels, and how we still place coverage

Florida pet medical insurance and Florida dog-liability insurance are different products with different breed moods. A carrier that will reimburse a TPLO may still refuse a bite claim on the home policy. We separate those conversations so a Palmetto Bay household does not find the gap at the ER and at the attorney’s office on the same week.

Medical pet insurance is usually kinder than home liability

Accident-and-illness plans often take mixed breeds with a note. Some still load premium on listed breeds. Homeowners animal liability is where the hard no lives: exclusions, sublimits, or a requirement to add a canine liability policy. If you have a dog people on the internet argue about, tell us on the home application and on the pet application. They are not the same underwriting file.

A “lab mix” that looks like something else in photos will be something else in a claim. Be accurate. Shelters in Miami-Dade write labels fast. We can work with DNA if you have it. We cannot work with a surprise.

What we need on the pet application

Species, breed or mix as listed at the vet, age, zip, whether they are spayed or neutered, and any conditions already in the chart. Photos help when the breed is a debate. We would rather have an honest mix than a pretty lie that voids a claim.

If there is a bite history, that is a home-liability fact more than a medical-insurance fact. Still tell both. Two departments, one dog.

Landlords, HOAs, and Doral rentals

A Doral lease that bans certain breeds is a lease. Insurance will not override it. If the HOA wants proof of liability, that is usually the home or renters policy, sometimes with a specific limit. We issue the evidence they asked for when the policy actually has the coverage. We do not create a breed that is not on the application.

Training, fencing, and the underwriting you do yourself

Carriers like enclosed yards, not invisible theory. Palmetto Bay canal lots still need a gate that latches. If the animal is a jumper, say so and fix the yard. A $90 latch is cheaper than a liability claim and a medical policy that will not pay a neighbor’s ER.

Place both, on purpose

Start a pet quote for the medical side. Ask us to look at the home or renters animal-liability language the same week. The Palmetto approach is two answers, not one product pretending to be both.
